Achilles tendonitis is one of the more common problem in running athletes, especially on the hard road surfaces. It is more common in athletes over teh age of 40. Achilles tendon injuries heal slowly as they do not have a direct blood supply and rely on blood flowing in from sheaths that surround the tendon.

Achilles tendonitis is generally caused by a number of factors that combine to act together. The most common of these factors is overuse, that is just doing too much running or doing something like too much too soon. Tight achllies tendons are also a risk factor as they put much more strain on the tendon. Running shoes that are worn out unevenly are also an important a risk factor. Abnormal foot and lower leg biomechanics is also a factor in increasing the strain on the tendon.

Management of Achilles tendonitis starts with some rest or activity modification (such as substituting cycling running); using with ice and drugs to reduce swelling; and maybe some anti-inflammatory medication. A heel lift is also often used. Achilles tendonitis foot orthotics are usuallneeded to alter foot biomechanics to make the running more sound. Running shoes will need to be looked and repalced at to ensure that they are appropriate.
