Functional Hallux Limitus
Functional hallux limitus is a technical name for a common problem. Functional represents that that it is something that only occurs when we are walking or running, ie functioning. Hallux is the technical term for the big toe. Limitus is also a technical term and means a limitation in joint motion. So all this means is that functional hallux limitus there is a limitation in motion of the big toe when running or walking.
Why is functional hallux limitus something that is important? The big toe or hallux joint is that joint that has to move when we are walking or running. Think for a moment how hard it might be to move forward if that joint does not move? If the joint does not move, then running and walking is going to be very inefficient and the body has to get that motion from somewhere else. In order to get this motion, then other joints will be forced to move more than they should at a time that they should not be moving. This compensation at other joints cand become painful.
Despite functional hallux limitus being a problem of the big toe joint, the symptoms occur elsewhere. Podiatrists spend a lot of time looking for this problem and using particular kinds of foot orthotics or foot supports to treat functional hallux limitus.
