The Open Directory Project (ODP) or DMOZ is the most well known web site link directory that web site owners all want to get their web sites listed in to build back links to their site. DMOZ or ODP (Open Directory Project) is owned by AOL but is run a large group of volunteers. They see this as a hobby and their main role as categorising the web with collections of unique web sites on each topic. They do not see themselves as offering any sort of listing service to webmasters. Webmasters want think of them as being a listing service. This leads to all sorts of arguments in SEO forums between webmasters and DMOZ editors and claims and counter claims abouthow corrupt DMOZ is .Most of it is counterproductive to getting a site listed in DMOZ and does not help.

To get a site listed in DMOZ, then you first must have a site that meets the guidelines that DMOZ have for sites. The site has to unique content that makes it different from other sites on it that if listed will add increased value to the category rather than just another site on teh same topic. The site should be submitted only once to the one best category once with a guideline compliant title and description. Before submitting, check the guidelines and check the sites already listed in the category. Write a description that matches the style of the category. Once you have submitted, there is nothing more that can be done. You either get listed or you do not. Anything else, such as resubmitting or email editors to ask for favours is likely to be counterproductive.

DMOZ editors see themselves as being there to build a category and not being there to process submissions from webmasters. Because of this, they use many sources to find sites, such as other directories,  following links on other web sites, using Google and the other search engines and personal knowledge of the industry. The submitted sites is usually thought of by editors as a poor source of sites, so many editor do not even look at teh submitted and spend their time more productively looking for sites from other sources. Other editors do browse the suggested sites looking for what could be outstanding sites. There are a number of ways to make sure that you do not get listed in DMOZ – just follow the advice of editors and not the SEO kiddies in SEO forums.
