A new recent treatment for fungal infections of toenails is laser treatment for toenail fungus. This technique uses a laser beam to destroy the fungal infection. It can not fix the nail immediately, as you then have to wait until the nail grows out with the dead fungal elements in it. Laser treatment for onychomycosis is being widely promoted in the news media and on video sites (see fungal laser) on the basis of a very small study done by one company that is marketing the product. Large clinical studies are underway, but have not yet been finished.

The laser treatment for nail fungus can be expensive, costing up to $1000 for a single treatment. Insurance companiesin the USA are not reimbursing for it yet. The Federal Drug Administration have not yet approved it, but some of the advertisment, news media and You Tube video clips are claiming that it has FDA approval. The evidence may well eventually show that it does work better than current methods (or it may not), but claims should not be made until all the research studies have finished.
