In order to rank well in the search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing, websites need to get links to them from other websites. It is considered that he more links to a website, the higher it should rank in the search engines (there are a lot of other factors that go into the rankings, so it is not strictly true that the website with the most links will rank the highest). Not all links are created the same. Link juice is the phrase that is use describe how much benefit a link can pass on to the website that the link is pointing at.

The links that pass the most link juice are those links that are editorially given and not got through methods that are easy to get such forum signature links; commenting on blogs  and submitting to web directories); those links that do not have the nofollow attribute or tag added pass a benefit; the links that are on pages that have a higher Google PR tend to pass much more link juice.  These are the types of links that the main three search engines like to give good benefit to when deciding how to rank sites.
