Sinus tarsi syndrome is a common problem that can occur in two situations:

1. It can follow an ankle sprain. The contents of the sinus tarsi (a small tunnel of bone between the talus and calcaneus) can also be stretched during an ankle sprain. This can frequently be mised and not be diagnosed until the anle sprain recovers and a chronic pain problem is present. The treatment of this is better rehabilitation of the ankle sprain and manipulation of the joints involved.

2. The other cuase of sinus tarsi syndrome is a flat or pronated foot, which can cause a compression of the lateral or outside of the sinus tarsi. If the forces of this compression are great enough, then it can become painful. Foot orthotics are generally needed to treat this.

In both cases, sometimes an injection is needed for sinus tarsi syndrome.
