Podiatry is a health profession that deals with the diagnosis and treatment foot and realted problems by a range of mechanical, surgical and pharmaceutical means. Just what a podiatrist does, varies from country to country and is reflected in the scope of practice legislation of each country and the length of education in each country.

In the United States, podiatric medicine is a postgrad degree of 4 years followed by a three year residency.  Podiatry in the United Kingdom and Australia is a 3-4 year undergrad qualification but does not contain any surgical training. Those who want to pursue the surgical qualification take part in a post-graduate surgical program while working a as general podiatrist.

Some of the condition problems treated by podiatrists include fungal infections, corn and calluses, thickened toe nails, ingrown nails, bunions and hallux valgus, hammer toes, flat feet, sports injuries, claw toes, heel pain and plantar fasciitis.
