Severs disease is a well known and common problem of the childs foot that affects children (mostly boys) from the ages of 10 to 15 years. It is a common overuse type injury due to overload of the heel. It is more common in more active child. Calcaneal apophysitis is the name for this condition used by health professionals. Pain is more commonly felt at the back and sides of the heel.

Up to the age of fifteen it is possible to strain a flat plate of cartilage that is between the two pieces of bone as teh back of the heel. This results in something that is very similar to a stress fracture. This is more common in active children who play a lot of sports, in children wwho also have tight calf muscles and in children with have flat or pronated feet.

Severs disease treatment by health professionals usually consists of some sort of activty modification or rest so that there is a cut back on the amount of sports that are played; the use of soft heel raises to help the heel; it is also possible to use foot orthotics to improve foot structure.

Those who have  severs disease, should seek health professional advice. More on Severs Disease.
